Shito Ryu Seiko Kai Karate Do
Karate Do means "way of the empty hand". The meaning of "empty hand" is twofold. It refers to fighting without a weapon, but also means practising with a clear, calm mind. Our classes emphasize finding harmony in one's movements and developing inner peace and focus.
Core training, cardiovascular fitness, plyometric burst, rapid muscle activation, relaxation and heightened awareness are a few of the benefits of karate martial arts practice. One needs no gym when training karate. The art itself provides maximum strength, relaxation and fitness. It can be practised anywhere and will grow with you over time, leading to a lifetime of discovery and excitement as new abilities develop. As you continue to practice, your karate will improve as you age; precision and focus replace the greater strength and flexibility of youth.
"Soft, Flowing, Explosive"
Although our techniques begin as a method of self defence, the goal of karate do is to achieve inner peace and sensitivity to one's surroundings. This emphasis on well being and finding inner harmony is unique to our system of karate instruction. Students become capable at defending themselves from harm. The goal of training is to be at peace mentally and physically.
In our classes, we remain focussed on traditional Okinawan karate teaching methods which began as a supplement to meditation practice. Karate training in the traditional format is based on the cultivation of harmony with the opponent and traces its history back to the 6th century.
David Chandross, Ph.D.
Sensei Chandross is a certified black belt who has practised Shito Ryu karate since 1989. As a 10 year old, he first enrolled in Judo and later Jiu Jutsu and then trained in Ann Arbor, Michigan in Kobudo (traditional weapons). After studying tactical self defense and Jeet Kune Do with Lt. Murray Burton-Wynn of the Canadian Armed Forces, he became discouraged by the presentation of karate and traditional training as "deadly fighting arts". In order to find a deeper art, David studied for more than 20 years under karate and aikido Sensei Greg Angus, incorporating elements of Aiki practice into his karate training. The result is a system of teaching karate which is soft, flowing and explosive, reflecting harmony with nature.
David holds a Ph.D. in education and has held academic positions at Ryerson University, the University of British Columbia and Simon Fraser University. He is also a certified sea kayaking instructor, with a love for mountaineering and back country skiing.
