Aikido is a Japanese martial arts that is about connecting through motion. With its emphasis on spherical or circular motion, Aikido allows the martial arts practitioner to effectively blend with an attack resulting in a non-confrontational connection between partners.
Aikido is always practiced with a partner, and training involves studying basic Aikido movements and postures in order to better understand the dynamic relationship between yourself and your partner. The immediate benefits include stress relief and an increase in flexibility, stamina and strength.
While studying the martial applications and learning to control the devastating power of Aikido is an important and vital element of practice, there is a further goal: that is to be present — to be completely in the moment with no thoughts of past or future. By being “naka ima”, we become calm and centered. We begin to understand that Aikido is about union rather than separation, harmony rather than conflict, about restoring one’s body and mind rather than the destruction of another.
Aikido is an exciting, dynamic and creative martial arts practice that liberates us as individuals. In this pursuit of excellence we come to realize the hidden potential within ourselves. By connecting through motion, we can recognize the interconnectedness of all things.
History of Aikido
Aikido is a modern Japanese martial art, developed by Morihei Ueshiba (1883-1969). The fundamental principle behind this extremely effective method of self defence is the harmonizing of energy. By blending with the opponent’s attack, the force can be safely redirected, resulting in a throw or pin.
On a deeper level, Aikido provides insights into the inter-connectedness of all things through the study of Ki (life force).
This results in a deep and abiding sense of respect for other people and the world at large. Ultimately, Aikido provides us with the means to peacefully resolve conflict and to avoid violence.
Aikido is a martial art that can be practiced by all people, kids and adults, regardless of age or gender.
